OK so I finally got around to doing a review of this Imperial Stout Trooper after several people said I should try it out, well last night was the night. When you see the packaging and bottle for this beer, a storm trooper from Star Wars, huh?
Novelty beers are normally just that novelties. Sold to fans because they have to have everything from that movie and not really for people that like beer in general, but anyway I taking the plunge because other people say this is great, so let’s get on with the review. I will also say that this is not a licensed Star Wars product, just good marketing.
Imperial Stout Trooper pours like a thick dark coffee to espresso color and bears a large fluffy creamy coffee colored head. This head hangs around for the most part a lot of it stays for the duration of the beer.
As the pour settles the liquid slowly turns to a black as a starless night. This motor oil like mix is just taunting me “drink me”.
Imperial Stout Trooper smells of a coffee, chocolate, a touch of caramel, and a very rich roasted malt. As I take a second smell all the smells are coming through with a touch of licorice and a very faint alcohol smell.
Imperial Stout Trooper tastes of a creamy coffee to chocolate with a very complex mix of maltyness that seems to never end. As you take a few more drinks you get more flavors of deep caramel, brown sugar, and a slight bitterness of the hops with a little charcoal flavor.
This an amazingly complex flavor of creamy malty goodness with a medium body and an after taste unsweetened chocolate.
Imperial Stout Trooper is a great stout that cannot be denied with great flavor that can only come from expert brewers. This is a highly recommended as far stouts go I can only recommend one stout above this one (Ten FIDY), but this is really a close call. Almost too close to call.
Bottom-line if you want a great stout you can’t go wrong with this one.
