In-Game Housing

In-game housing isn’t something that is discussed a lot on gaming sites. Not that it isn’t wanted in game, but to be honest it is fluff content, it would be bigger if these houses had a real purpose.

This was somewhat implemented in SWG (Star Wars Galaxies) as the house could house crafting machines along with vendors, so you could a self-contained factory and store all under the same roof.

The Big News WoW in-game Housing

I figured I would jump on this topic, since hearing that World of Warcraft has finally decided that this is a feature they can’t live without any longer and will be finally put in-game soon. When I first hear this new I kind of chuckled because WoW is and was a perfect game for in-game housing and I’m surprised it took this long.

Other housing in-games

Well we know that most in-game housing are online games, but Skyrim added this as a place to craft and sleep, it worked but still was lacking some creativity.

Some of the online games let you be a bit more creative, as you’re able to decorate pretty much everything in the house. For instance EQ2, LOTRO, SWG all have the ability to decorate as you see fit and of course you can’t forget Second Life which might be the king of letting your creativity flow.

Most online games these in-housing are nothing more than trophy rooms, which is fine it is cool to see everything that you have achieved and collected for your time in game. To me that is what most housing systems are today. Will that change, we’ll just have to wait and see.

What I would like to see with the whole in-game housing, is a real purpose to them in the first place. I’m just throwing ideas out now. Maybe you get a bonus if you sleep in your own bed. Maybe you get something there you can’t get anywhere else that helps you in your daily travels.

A trophy room with a purpose is that too much to ask?

So today I ask you, what is your favorite in-game housing system and what needs to be added?

I’ve never been into World Of Warcraft. It’s too generic for me personally and I rarely pay attention to housing in games anyway.

I don’t really pay to much attention to them either, I would if they had a purpose.

The housing in Dark Age of Camelot wasn’t too bad. You could decorate it, add useful stuff like crafting tables and teleport to your home to speed up traveling. The game didn’t have an auction house so attaching a store to your house was the only way to sell stuff to other players.

Yeah that had a good housing system. I might have to take another look at that one of these days.
