My top 5 favorite Sega Genesis characters #4
Sega Genesis characters give us some awesome gaming memories. They make us laugh, cry over video games, and then want to smash the controller on the ground. This is my list of my top 5 favorite Sega Genesis characters. Now introducing number 4….
This 998 year old android from the game Phantasy Star IV is one of the most valuable assets you obtain in your main party base in this game. He doesn’t come along until about midpoint in the game when you fly into outer space for the first time after rescuing his associate android Demi. He is in charge of the space station Zelan which controls the climates of the solar system. All I can say is I am so freaking glad he is on your side and not siding with Dark Force because it would be game over for us.
Wren is the tank of the group meaning you can place him in the front of the line for your party so he takes the most damage (for the longest time I had no clue that order of the party members meant affect the frequency they were hit…). You don’t have to worry about physical attacks draining his health too far because Wren’s awesome metal frame is harder than anything in the Algol solar system.
His attacks are very powerful and he is equipped with a fantastic move called Recover which heals over half of his health each use. You are able to find upgrades for him in various machine centers dotted around the planets which give him awesome attacks. My favorite is Positron Bolt which is featured in the picture on the top right.
Some of his weaknesses include that you cannot heal or revive him with regular magic except for 3 spells that are not available that often because they are all used by characters that only stay with you a short period of time towards end game and therefore you have to rely either on stopping his attacks and using a turn to use Recover or use a repair kit on him. That kind of sucks. Any sort of magic based attacks will drain his health pretty quickly also so be careful with his placement in certain boss fights.
His involvement in the story is interesting to me because he has been around for so long and yet he is still learning new things, mainly how to interact with organic life forms. His personality reminds me of Data from Star Trek because he is so curious yet the way he says anything (even jokes) is mechanical and emotionless but for some reason very funny at times with his facial expressions.
Here is a great fight from Phantasy Star IV against Dark Force 3. Even though this is a low level clear of this boss, Wren is a trooper and you can be guaranteed he will rarely die as long as you are always paying attention to what you’re doing.
