Naming a new created game character?

Posted on 7/11/2013 by with 6 comments

So you got into the latest game and you create a character just the way you want it. Then you type in your name and you get the message “Name already taken”.

How can that be you have been using this name on every game since the comedore64 days? Now I’m stuck in a rut what do I do now?

So I’m trying to come up with a system to name a character without resorting to using names of people and references from obscure TV shows. Change hear the gears in my brain grinding. I can!

The way I normally create a secondary character name is by changing the first letter of the name in alphabetical order to create a new name. Like this Bob becomes Cob, Dob, etc.

The hard part is coming up with the name in the first place. I’ve been trying to come with some way to name my character uniquely, without using some hooky random name generator that gives me a name I can’t even say.

If anyone has ideas I’m all ears, until then “Barney Fife” will be roaming the world of Guild Wars 2

So today I ask you, how do you name your game characters?

I get so frustrated with naming my characters. I recently started a character in Mafia Wars and every iteration of the name that I was trying to register was taken, even some that I thought couldn’t possibly be used. Similar to the, Bob, Cob, Dob idea, I merely added a repeat letter. For instance, Lissa might become Lissaa ot LLissa. Hope that helps some.

I use references/slang from my cajun background. If I translated these into English, I’d be walking around with names such as “idiot”, “trouble maker”, “nightmare”, “sweety”, etc. Another variation I’ve used is band names (alan parsons project) or some literary references to a particular novel, such as Iain M. Banks culture series (he has an interesting spaceship naming convention).

I don’t know what to tell you haha I also have been using the same name since you were able to pick one! I usually roll with IckabodKrayne (if enough letters are allowed) Although that name has a looong story behind it. I would say usually I choose something slightly funny but also have personal meaning, so you won’t forget it and also usually other people haven’t used it.

P.S. please don’t steal my name hehehe
