Project Zomboid

Developer/Publisher: The Indie Stone

Project Zomboid is a third person open world survival horror game that is still in its alpha stage, but available for play after purchasing a license from developer the Indie Stone.

The games setting in a post-apocalyptic world filled with hordes of zombies to lend a hand in challenging the ill-equipped players. Yes you will be out of your league until you can find or salvage some part to make a decent weapon to defend yourself.

As the game opens you are asked to create a character, the choices are name, gender, body type, and hair color. Not sure how or if these have any bearing on the game or your character.

Then you need to pick an occupation the choices are unemployed, firefighter, police, park ranger, construction, and security guard. These can add some bonus skills to your character.

Project Zomboid opens somewhere in Knox County and it doesn’t look what it used to be like. Gone are the quiet neighborhoods and in their place are the hordes of zombies.

I start safely in a small one bedroom house with nothing but some food and a butter knife to defend myself, I don’t think I going to last too long with that as my main weapon. I assume this is how the game starts by placing you in a safe house but random location for each games start.

I look through all the cabinets and find enough food and supplies to make it through the first couple days. I feel like getting my bearing on where I am in game so I go out the front door, only to be surprised by a zombie standing 20 or so feet away from the door.

As you find items in game there are way to combine items to make better items and even build your own houses if you have the resources.

Once you encounter your first zombie you will need to learn how to swing or fight your way around them. The best way that this is done is to hold the left control key to enter aim mode and press your left mouse button to swing.

Luckily I have found a golf club and it’s time to see what my chip shot is like. I swing 5-6 times and the zombies goes down for good. Unfortunately the zombie has nothing on him.

I wonder around a bit to try to find some items to scavenge only to have a group of at least 10 zombies right on my heels. I try to make I back to my house by I’m cut off and there is no place to go. I decide this might be the time to fight a few of these back.

The first zombies does some serious damage to my left arm I’m bleeding badly. I run into the first house I can find, ripping some pants to make a bandage. Then I eat and drink to keep my strength up, but it is short lived I bleed to death in another few hours.

As you play Project Zomboid you will see this is more of a strategy game than a survival game, but in a good way.

If you develop a bond with your character this isn’t the game for you because you will die a lot.

If you think you have what it takes to survive the zombie apocalypse then you might want to give this a try to see how you would do. Project Zomboid is a fun game that can be played casual right up to hardcore. So far today I think my best survival time was just over 9 days, I’m still in the learning process in game, but I’ll keep playing.

The graphics in Project Zomboid are isometric spites which gives off the feel of a retro game from yesteryear. The graphics in game a minimalistic, but are very good for what is needed to play without any issues.

Overall the graphics in Project Zomboid are fair at best, but that is the look they were going for and the game is still fun to play.

The sounds in Project Zomboid are one of the areas in game which I would like to see some improvement. They are adequate to play the game as it is, but there seems to be a lot of little sounds missing in game.

The music is great to set the tone of this horror/zombie game.

I debated with myself for a long time before coming up with this score. I think there is a 5 or 6 score in Project Zomboid, but it’s still a little early in development to grant that right now. Once more of the game is implemented that is a possibility.  As its present condition I give this game a 4.

Verdict is 4 of 6
