Returning to an MMO after a long break.

A group of friends and I got together to have a couple beers and we talked about mostly gaming and what we wanted to play next. So I started to thinking about all those MMOs that I had left for the next game. Sometimes because I was bored, level capped, burnt out, or just left my own reasons for that.

So I posed the question have any of you returned to game after not playing for a long time? Everyone said oh yeah. After digging a little deeper I’m sorry to say the biggest victim in this little experiment was World of Warcraft. Just about everyone in my group had played it, quit and then went back to it at one time or another, but never stayed.

We talked a lot of what the reasons for leaving games, everyone pretty much had their own opinions, but after listening I had to try something. So I decided I would play a game I haven’t played in a long time.

So I returned to Vanguard after a long break, I didn’t leave because I didn’t like the game it was more of a lack of playing time than anything. I really didn’t have time to dedicate to playing back then.

This return is almost like a new game to me because it’s been so long since last playing. Being a relative older game the graphics aren’t great but still fun to play and learn all over.

When you return to a game you remember all the good time you have had in that game, of course you would remember the bad time as well as what in game really annoyed you. Yeah those are too easy to remember.

I reminisced about the old times but none of the people I had once played with were around. I forced myself to play a little while, but for me the magic was gone. I can always remember the good times I once had in this game and I logged off thinking to myself would try again some other time? Probably!

So today I ask you, have you returned to an MMO after a long break?

I am sad to say that i am one of those that played WOW, quit and fell off the wagon a few years later. I returned leveled a toon to 60 and quit. And i have never gone back. EQ2 is one i tend to always go back to. there is so much to do in that game that it always seems fresh.

Unfortunately for EQ2 I am busy with defiance, and my newest love….Neverwinter.

Thanks for sharing Billy. I played EQ2 way back at launch and on an off again as well. Neverwinter is a load of fun.

Wow, I didn’t realize Vanguard was still around. It seems like every time there’s news about an MMO, it’s either ” Goes Free to Play!” or ” Shuts Down!” Recent news about EverQuest Next notwithstanding…

Anyway… Since the original EQ, I’ve played just about every MMO out there (with a few exceptions). There are 3 of them that I have gone back to at least once after long periods of time: EverQuest (3 times), Final Fantasy XI (once), and WoW (twice).

Game nostalgia is a weird thing. EQ has changed a LOT since I quit and yet there was something almost soothing about going back to the choppy graphics. But I don’t usually stay long. MMO’s have come a long way since the late 90’s. The new stuff is fun. 🙂

Going back to old MMO’s is so much easier now, too, since almost everything I paid for years ago is now free. With the exception of the 3 games I already mentioned, though, I generally don’t go back. I usually quit for a gameplay reason and free doesn’t generally improve that.

Its still around, but starting to feel dated, still kind of a good change of pace though.

To be honest, I have never been able to get into MMORPGs. I love RPGs, but the idea of having to put so many hours into a game and having to play with other people all the time in order to get the best out of it doesn’t look that fun to me.

I have felt the same thing with other games though! Going back to Quake III after some years and seeing that the friends you used to play online with are never online anymore is very sad 🙁

I would probably be in the same boat as you, but my friend got me hooked on MMO years ago, they are really fun with friends. I still love offline RPG like the Elder Scrolls series

I came back to WoW after a 2.5 years break, because I got bored with the content.
MoP made a lot of changes, some really good one, some bad ones.

I’ve just hit 90 on my main this weekend, and after 3 weeks of playing, just finished customizing my UI to how I like it(I’m a minimalist).

Neat! I used to play WoW a lot as well. I will have to check out Vanguard. I am also looking forward to The Elder Scrolls Online and EverQuest Next.
