Pumpkinhead

by Shipyard Brewing Co.

There is a big spot in my heart for the Shipyard beer as I grew up in Maine and always hung out in places that had Shipyard on tap. It has been a long time since I had a pumpkin beer so I decided that it would be a Shipyard to get it started.

Pour:

Pumpkinhead pours a hazy golden to amber color with a very quickly dissipating bone white head of about 2 fingers in height. There is very little lacing left from the head.

Smell:

Pumpkinhead a first smell is that of a pumpkin pie, with nutmeg, cinnamon, spices and with touch of caramel maltyness. At second smell there is a faint of hops along with a funny but faint metallic hint.

Overall something is amiss here not sure what it is but the metallic smell id strong enough to make me think the taste will be off.

Taste:

At first taste I ask myself were is all the flavor to go with this smell. This tastes malty with a touch of ginger or spice coming in the end of my first taste. I don’t really get any pumpkin taste at all just the spices in the pumpkin pie mixture.

Overall Pumpkinhead tastes very weak, not a lot of flavor here

Verdict:

Overall Pumpkinhead was a trick rather than a treat. It is very weak in flavor and if you didn’t know it was a pumpkin beer, you probably wouldn’t know it from the taste.

Overall this beer needs to be brought back to the drawing board for a rework.

Verdict: 3 of 6

3pack

Not a big fan of flavored beer. I’m more of a strict barley malt and hops kind of guy. Still, as Halloween approaches I’d be apt to give some pumpkin ale a try. But not this one , it seems.

    Thanks for the review.
