In the last couple months there has been some stuff by game developers that was really dumb. I know the world as a professional game developer is a really cut throat life, but seriously there not all that dumb to burn bridges of their target audience.
I could probably write a book with all the dumb shit that developers have said in the last couple years, but here are just a couple of the highlights from the last six months.
The best one of the year so far!
Take-Two Interactive chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick says “MMOs do not work in the US!”
Considering for the most all I play is MMO games and look at that I live in the US amazing. Not really sure why these game don’t work for your company or why you don’t want to develop games for Americans?
I can say one thing is that your company probably makes more money selling overpriced console based cop killing games and the downloadable content and expansions that follow. Not wrong in my eyes but I just had to point that out for you.
I will continue to play MMOs more or less exclusively so I hope someday I will have the opportunity to play one of your MMOs in the future we know you will be free to play market soon enough.
The next dumb thing said by a game developer this year!
Trion Worlds’ CEO Lars Buttler likes to talk sometimes for someone who really likes their games I think he talks way too much. About the first of the year Lars talked about the downfall of 38 Studios and BioWares’ SWTOR debacle.
He gave his reasons for these games to go downhill and had to comment on why these layoff wouldn’t hit Trion. I was actually buying it I was glad they had a better business plan and had thought out there future very well.
Go ahead a few month later and Trion is hit with massive layoffs just like every other game company out there. Hey Lars want to talk about these layoffs? He’s nowhere to be found or won’t answer the questions about the layoffs.
We all know how the game industry works! You hire 400 staff to push out the latest game and once released your lay off 50-60% of the staff because you don’t need them anymore, at least until the next project gets underway.
When you have 2-3 projects going at once you tend to keep your staff a bit longer as well and we all know that now. All I can say is hope that your former staff has found work, because it’s tough out there right now.
The dumb developer conclusions.
Game Developers can be hyping up a game, putting your foot in your mouth, or just outright lying to us about the next patch to fix there awful code, but overall the developers can say some really funny things.
