Guild Leadership Part 2: effectively managing your officers.
As we continue our series on effectively managing your guild officers we need to keep in mind this is job is place solely in your hands as the guild leader.
The best way to effectively manage your officers is to make sure you have the person for the job to begin with.
So let’s look at what makes an office and officer.
The first thing you should look for is a person that is ready to lead the guild when you’re not there. The best trait of a guild officer is they should be ready to lead the guild at moment’s notice. This person should be ready to take charge when the situation arises.
This person should be trustworthy. Is this person save to have complete reign over your guild bank or stash. If not then you don’t want this person as an officer. Any guild officer that steals from the guild is lower than low in my book, the guild stash is the way you help your whole guild. I have never had the pleasure of dealing with someone stealing from the guild stash yet.
This person should be able to see problems from different point of view without jumping to conclusion. You need to be able to hear people out before making a decision.
This person needs to be available in game more than the average guild member. This is one of the harder of the jobs, because you find that guild leaders and officers tend to burnout faster than the average player.
This person needs to be able to settle disputes fairly and quickly. A lot of time the guild leader isn’t around when the fireworks start, so a guild officer need to take control and solve any disputes between other players fairly.
There are so many things I could say about the traits your guild officers should have, but you get the picture here. When you find a good group of officers hold on to them tightly and your job will be that much easier.
Managing your officers to avoid game burnout.
As a guild leader or guild officer there will come a time, yes it doesn’t happen when you feel burnt out in a game. Sometimes it’s just having to deal with the same people in the game.
So I highly recommend two possible fixes to game burnout for your officers.
Fix 1 is that you let your officer take time away from in game duties. This can be done by rotating the duties to other officers or taking their duties yourself for a week or so. Just to give them a breather and let them enjoy the game again. You might even want to tell them to relax out of game or at least spend a little more out of game than normal. This does wonders when you’re feeling stressed in game.
Fix 2 is to promote new officers to take up some of the slack of the guild duties. This is a better choice if a player is overwhelmed in game, it’s starting to be a 2nd job and nobody wants that.
These officers won’t tell you when there burnt-out you need to spot this and you should be able to see it just in the way they conduct themselves during their daily guild activities. If they tell you there burnout it might be too late. So make sure you give all your officers a rest from time to time.
Being an effective guild leader comes down your leadership ability and having an adequate support staff of officers. You don’t have to do this alone. Your officers really make your guild work as it was intended too.
