Guild Leader

My Guild’s Raid Rules

I get asked a lot of questions about raids. Raiding is a whole other type of leadership, it doesn’t include hardly any of the traits of a guild leader. A guild leader is not a raid leader! You can lead raid but you need to put on a different face, that’s why a lot of us guild leaders let someone else lead raids.

On a day-to-day basis the biggest trait a guild leader uses is patience and as for the raid leader they use anything they need to motivate and to achieve whatever needs to be done in each raid.

Guild Rules for a raids:

Allow members to sign up for all raid events. I always enforce a first come first served basis for all raids. No acceptation for high-ranking guild members, no favoritism period.

People should always be on time and prepared to play.

The Raid Leader should let everyone should know their role and what is needed to bring or change gear if needed.

People that don’t raid regularly should be brought up to speed slowly, teach and make sure they understand everything about what takes place in the a raid and what is expected of them.

Teamwork can’t not be said enough. The group must work as a team we know when people are not doing their jobs, because we fall like a house of cards no need for opinions here.

Fuss up you can’t handle your crowd control job, no need to hide it, let them know you need help.

Listen to the raid leader he is running the show in raid, sometime we don’t understand why they are doing what they’re doing, don’t question it just do it. Later on you can ask why, if you feel the need to.

Leading a raid is not easy even if you have the best player and even when you have everything going your way, cut the raid leader some lack if things don’t go as planned. We all have bad days or bad raids, but being supportive is a great tool at making people work together.

Guild Leader is a weekly series by Beer and Joysticks .com and written by Chris Gillis covering all aspects of being a better guild leader. If you have any questions or comments we welcome them below this article.

You know, until I read through some of these articles, I never appreciated the types of skills we used as guild leaders.

Indeed, raid leading is completely different. Guild leaders I always viewed as a sort of “Social ambassador” who looked to set rules for the guild but then spread the message. The raid leader is your strategist, your co-ordinator.

I used to play a lot of World of Warcraft and on my server, I came in possession of the Hordes oldest guild. Many of the people from that guild had been there from the beta days, then it was passed to me. Before it was passed to me, the guild went nowhere and honestly, it didn’t go much further with me (I held it for a good year and a half before quitting WoW due to personal views on the story!)

But, I do look back and remember all the more people you met -due to being- a guild leader. The raid leader was a role that always eluded me. I was a good healer for both pick up groups and guild raids… But to lead? That takes time to learn the battles.

    Great post! 🙂

I can honestly say I am not a raid leader, I have given it a few tries, but for me the guild was always enough for me to handle.

    Thanks for commenting Tim!
