Turning into a Casual gamer?

Casual gamer

Lately I have been having a hard time getting into a lot of games that I try. Which in turn is slowly limiting my gaming time. As I would normally say I could and have been a hardcore gamer for the most part of my gaming experiences, but as time goes on I seem to be slipping into more of a casual gamer.

I can see my friends now say your casual gamer, I don’t think so.

Me the Casual gamer?

I’m turning into a casual gamer because I really can’t find my niche game right now, this might change with the next evolution on games coming out. Or maybe I’ll just shake the fog that I’m in any day now.

The big problem is I just can’t find anything that hold my attention for any length of time. Yes, I still play all the popular games just playing for a much short gaming stint then I move on to something else.

I could name all the games I have installed and most of you would say you have how many games installed? Then it would turn to laughing, wow that’s a lot of games that can’t be healthy!

Is this just me?

Not sure why this is, I used to play a lot of online games for lengths at a time that were sure to be unhealthy amount of time to say the least.

To step back a few years I would play Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies for hours on end with my friends. Today I still play games with the same people that I did way back then, but now I get the same from a few hours of game that took 5-6 hours back then.

Shorter gaming periods by choice.

As I change out games more often the games seem to stay fresh and I want to play more often just for shorter periods at a time. What has evolved here is this just me?

There a lot of games on the horizon that I can see myself jumping back into the hard core mode of gaming, but for now I’m a happy casual player right now. That alone sounds funny for me to say!

So I would say for me I’m a hardcore gamer that plays way too many games but all on a casual basis. Were the hardcore game will play one game for an extended period I play 3-4 games in the same period of time.

So today I ask you, are you a casual gamer or hardcore?

I’m going to be honest and say that I hate that we still make distinctions between hardcore and casual. If you like playing video games, you’re a gamer. This should be the only important thing. Creating types of gamers creates an us vs. them mentality when we should be celebrating that all gamers love games in their own way.

I’m always amazed and amused that my 69 year old father plays some bubble bursting game on his iPhone in a more “hardcore” way than I play a lot of my games. We’re talking several hours EVERY day! LOL And this often equates to way more hours than I spend per day on my games. Yet he’s considered “casual.”

My point is that it is becoming harder and harder to really DEFINE these different types of gamers. Video games are one my biggest passions in life, but my “casual gamer” dad plays more hours a day than I do. So does that make me casual? Does that make him hardcore? 😉

I’m going to say neither. We both love games in our own way. Just like love for other people. I love my son in a completely different way than I love my husband. Do I love one more than the other? Not really. It’s just different. 🙂 I think gamers would do well to understand this kind of thing. We’re far too “us vs. them,” about stuff like this, if you ask me…

I understand what your saying, but I think anyone who plays a casual game for more 2-3 hours a day to me is hardcore.

To be hardcore is needing to play a game just play, not because you want you have too. It almost becomes part of your life more than RL.

For me those days are pretty much over, at least until the next big game come out.
    I hope that makes sense.

Whew! That means I’m still hardcore! 🙂 Honestly, as much as I hate the separation between casual and hardcore, I still like to think of myself as hardcore. Games are absolutely part of my real life. Just as much as my job and it’s part of how I interact with my family.

My husband and I rarely fight, but when we do, it’s often because I’m upset that he doesn’t game enough with me or game enough at all. (Go ahead and laugh at that. I would!) But he says many of the same things you’re saying.

The interesting thing is that I think part of the issue is that the majority of games today are not designed for extended periods of play time anymore. We have become a society that does a lot of stuff in spurts. We don’t sit down for hours on end to focus on a single task. We do tons of stuff at once. Games today reflect that need/trend in today’s society.

I’m still the type that will sit for hours and forget to eat if I’m playing games. But I play JRPG’s mostly, so that works. Also, if we’re talking MMO games, if I have friends to play with, we’ll go all day and all night until we start falling asleep at the keyboard. But it’s more a social thing than a game thing. It doesn’t really matter WHAT we’re doing, but the fact that we’re doing it together is what keeps us going.

That said, I’m curious how things are going to play out with FFXIV. My husband is going to be joining me, my son, and three of our friends. I wonder if I’ll get mad at him for not keeping up or something! LOL Poor guy! 😉

You’ll find as you get older that life gets in the way of gaming. I don’t have the same now as I did when I was younger. Nor do I have the same attention span, however that could be because, like you, I haven’t been able to find anything to hold my attention either. Trials Evolution is the go to game for now, but only because you can pick it up and put it down at random without having to remember any intricate details 🙂

Yeah I see that happening more and more. I play more games and get less out of it.

This happens to all of us as we get jobs, family, and other priority. But I swear to my grave I’ll die as a gamer, a FREE AND HAPPY MAN who will pwn noobs.

I love everything electronic, computer, gadgets, you name it! I also work in the field in IT/Tech support. I’m don’t know why this is, but I never got into games. Sure I’ve played a few, but haven’t held much attraction for me. Can anyone suggest a good game for OS X that is fun and easy to play. I used to enjoy SimCity years back & I know they’re coming out with a revamped version of that shortly. Ideas would be appreciated. Thx!

Wayne you might like Civilization V, that’s a turn based strategy has some similarities to the board game Risk.

If you in for something different take a look at don’t starve its a survival game with a cartoony look and feel, but very fun.

Thanks, I like the cartoony game, right now I need something simple that holds my attention initially and then I’ll graduate to strategy. I appreciate it!
